International 4800 4X4: Powertrain

Affects International 4800 4X4 · 1999–2002 — about 7 vehicles.

The hazard

On certain 4800 4x4 vehicles, the front propeller shaft may have been replaced with one having a double cardan joint at each end as part of a previous recall. The centering ball and socket of the double cardan joint may sieze, which could cause the driveshaft to break apart, and under certain conditions, potentially causing axle lockup and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will install front driveshaft guards at both ends of the shaft, install lockout front wheel hubs, and replace any drive shaft found with loose or binding double cardan joints at either end.
