The hazard
On certain motorcycles, frequent short-trip usage, particularly at low ambient temperatures, causes condensation, increasing the proportion of water in the engine oil. The water vapour produced while the engine is running condenses at the outlet port of the dry-sump oil tank breather. If temperatures are below 0 degrees Celsius, the condensation can freeze and plug the breather line of the oil tank. As a result, oil tank over-pressurization can cause the tank to rupture, allowing oil to escape onto the rear wheel and create the risk of a crash causing injuries or death. Correction: Dealers will install an updated oil cap with a pressure relief valve.
